DensityDesign Lab - Politecnico di Milano
February the 15th, 2019 - from 10.00 to 17.30
Polifactory
Edificio B3, Campus Candiani - Via Candiani, 72 - 20158 Milano - Italy
Our second 2COeveryday gathering will take place in Milan and will be hosted by DensityDesign Lab.
DensityDesign is a Research Lab in the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano. It focuses on the visual representation of complex social, organizational and urban phenomena. Although producing, collecting, and sharing information has become much easier, robust methods and effective visual tools are still needed to observe and explore the nature of complex issues.
DensityDesign's researchers have participated in 2CO activities since the very first conference in Alghero 2013
Sessions
Complexity beyond Visualization
Paolo Ciuccarelli
Density Design Lab - Politecnico di Milano
The pervasiveness of data and the impact they (could) have in everyday life call for a deeper engagement of design, both as a discipline and practice. Designers can and should help escaping the techno-centric enthusiasm to understand the threats and the opportunities for all the stakeholders and frame them within a democratic participation. This requires designers to embrace the complexity of data-intensive experiences, put data processes in context and consider the conditions and the consequences at every touchpoint, accepting a broad spectrum of languages and shifting the scope of design from the single interfaces to the systems and the platforms they build.
Beyond what meets the eye: sonifying data for increased awareness
Sara Lenzi
Density Design Lab - Politecnico di Milano
Data Sonification is a form of representing data which is as of today, largely underused. Still, our sense of hearing is extremely sophisticated and highly flexible. Can we leverage it to take better actions in uncertain territories, such as when dealing with cyber threats and (still) unreliable artificial intelligence?

A love story between data and people
Pau Garcia

A short story about the perception of data in politics, society and how data physicalization can be a way to get people to the meaning behind each number.
Research on information-rich experience at Unibz
Valeria Burgio e Matteo Moretti
Università di Bolzano
By investigating information-rich experience approaches, the Visual Journalism research group at Unibz has beeen exploring new practices and theories to engage and inform a broader audience since 2011.
These encompass Valeria Burgio's research project on selection and exclusion processes behind information visualization, and Matteo Moretti's experiments with participatory data physicalization.

Univ. Milano Bicocca
Designing from the people perspective: a participatory experience of interactive data visualisation in the field of digital archives.
Alghero’s prison sidewalk museum
Nicolò Ceccarelli
Lab AnimazioneDesign - DADU, Alghero
As a development of an experimental museum project carried out last spring in collaboration with the Direction of Alghero’s prison, we are currently working on a mixed-media hybrid exhibition.
The project aims at offering a series of visual insights of this absolutely unique human microcosm. Here the rules and the conventions of social life are subject to extreme conditions, forcing the human communities that share it – convicts and guards – to develop unique communication systems.
